In the modern era, the world is witnessing rapid digital advancement that has impacted various aspects of life. Students, in particular, have been significantly affected by this transformation. Technology and digital tools have become an essential part of their daily lives—whether in learning, communication, or entertainment. Despite the vast educational opportunities these tools provide, excessive use can negatively affect students’ mental health, making it necessary to raise awareness about achieving a balance between benefiting from technology and maintaining psychological well-being.
First: The Impact of the Digital Environment on Students’ Mental Health
The digital environment allows students quick access to information and diverse learning resources. However, it may also expose them to new psychological pressures. Continuous comparison on social media, the abundance of digital content, and multitasking between studying and online interaction can lead to stress, anxiety, and lack of focus.
Second: Psychological Challenges in the Digital Age
Excessive use of electronic devices:
Spending long hours in front of screens can result in mental fatigue and reduced concentration.
Pressure from social comparison:
Some students may feel dissatisfied with themselves due to comparing their achievements with others on digital platforms.
Distraction and difficulty concentrating:
Frequent notifications and multiple applications can weaken a student’s ability to focus for extended periods.
Social isolation:
Overreliance on digital communication may reduce direct, face-to-face interactions.
Third: The Role of the Family in Supporting Mental Health
Families can help students maintain a healthy balance with technology by regulating screen time, encouraging real-life activities such as reading and sports, and fostering open dialogue about the challenges students may face in the digital world.
Fourth: The Role of the School and Teacher
Schools contribute to supporting students’ mental health by raising awareness about safe and balanced technology use, integrating interactive activities in the classroom, and monitoring psychological aspects alongside academic achievement.
Fifth: Skills Students Need in the Digital Age
It is important for students to acquire skills that help them adapt to the digital environment, such as time management, organizing the use of social media, and developing focus and critical thinking abilities.
Digital technology is a powerful tool that can support students’ learning and broaden their horizons. However, it requires conscious and balanced use. When families, schools, and students work together to manage this balance, a healthy educational environment can be created—one that preserves students’ mental health and enables them to benefit from the opportunities of the digital age without turning them into a source of stress or psychological disturbance.
